Mermaid Bay

Hello All, We are the new current owners of Mermaid Bay, Natalie & Judith Righton, We brought the company off Christie Green in Woodhill in February 2010, Natalie made the soap for Christie for the last 2 years and was offered the chance to buy the business and couldnt refuse.

Natalie also had a lil baby boy in February 2010 called Zion, so is busy with him aswell and having the business from home works great for everyone.

Now alittle bit about how the company started…

The Mermaid Bay Soap Company began in 1987 as a small family business, based in Whangarei, in New Zealand’s beautiful Northland.

At first it was because friends and family thought it was just marvellous! It was lovely to use, smelt great and didn’t leave any soap scum to be cleaned off the shower – this is a little mentioned side effect of using handmade soap! More importantly, life-long problems of dry, itchy skin disappeared and the soap didn’t irritate one of the family members psoriasis.

People often ask if there is a “Mermaid Bay”? No, there isn’t. They had fallen in love with the little mermaid an artist friend, Sally Fagence, had drawn for them. They also felt Mermaid Bay would be a memorable name.

Years passed and the range of products evolved to the more than 40 different soaps and many other products now available. And although the business has also evolved and changed ownership, the original philosophy behind the business remains firmly as, our promise:

  • to provide high quality products, made with the best possible ingredients, at a fair price.
  • to make a range of soap, and other products, that can be safely used by people like themselves, with sensitive skin.
  • to make environmentally friendly products, tested on humans, not animals without using unnecessary detergents or chemicals (i.e. no sodium laureth sulphate and, paraben free).
  • and no matter how much we grow, to continue to make all our own products.
